I'm not a fan of the politics in Quebec, but as a visitor/tourist I've had no problems communicating. There is a lot to see there, especially if you get away from Montreal, Quebec City, and the Autoroute.
Last trip there we were in a pretty ritzy but very rural restaurant. Menu all French, with some things I couldn't make out. Waiter a bit of a snootnose. Pulled out my dictionary, at which time two fellows from different tables got up, came over, and offered to help me out. Typical French Canadian hospitality. Darn good food, too!
We may have eaten in that same restaurant. The service and food were good but the attitude stunk. We also got ripped off on exchange at one spot. I was going to go to the bank and get more Canadian money but they insisted they would give the same rate. They may have also had a bridge for sale.
I took a charter bus tour t0o Montreal once (as the driver) and the guide & I sat at a table together. The waiter bumped her glass of water into her lap and immediately said "Oh Sh1t" I said was that French. His response was "please don't say I used English. I will be fired". We all got a good laugh out of it and she got a free desert.
