I spend a month in Baja few years ago and it was very enjoyable.
Sure had to observe gas station attendants, but white sand beaches, 89F water in the bay where you could see fish 12 feet down and private campgrounds for $4 a night.
Add 30 cents/lb for fresh catch fish and $5 for Lobster about a foot long.
Met California camper there, who says he visit remote beach every single year. The only time he locks his camper is when California tourists show on the beach.
Sure comparing crime in Baja to central Mexico is like comparing crime in Baltimore to Los Angeles, but from the information I gather single city of Oakland, California has more statistic crime than whole country of Mexico.
The only bad memory was
1 from buying local ice at the end of the trip
2. spending Friday night on the beach 1 hr from the border. Very quiet spot become ridden by open frame generator noise, override by loud music and covered by pot smoke when later in the evening California teenagers arrived.
Side question, any chances to drive new 6.7 diesel on Mexican fuel?
