We traveled through Banff, Jasper the end of May and stayed at the campground in Lake Louise. The same bear warnings were there then. Just do as they say. You do not need a gun. We had no problem.
When we traveled through the park, we saw a lot of stupid people get out of their vehicles, walk up to the bears as they were munching on the side of the road (mind you, this was May, they had just woken up and were hungry.) trying to take pictures. These same stupid people must have thought they were in a zoo taking pictures of bears behind bars. One woman walked up to within 15' of the WILD bear.
These are wild animals, we are invading their territory. All it takes is one person to feed the bears, to give the bear a death sentence.
