Tupelo MS to Montgomery, AL options?

Looking at Tupelo then south on ALT 45 to meridan, MS then east on Hwy 20 then 80 in AL? Anyone know about this road.

Other way would be out of Tupelo go east toward Birmingham then south on the interstate to Montgomery. Not sure about either of these routes.
I have traveled the route ALT 45 To Meridan, MS and it's fine - usually just keep going south from there so not sure about the road east.
Interested in type of road and other experiences.

    Why not U.S. 78/I-22 to Birmingham and South on I-65? I don't know what the status of the I-22/I-65 interchange is at present... But it was SUPPOSED to be completed "in late 2014." If it isn't complete, some minor juggling on surface roads (Coalburg Rd./Daniel Payne Drive) to connect to I-65 South is about the only departure from controlled access for your entire trip.

    That said, U.S. 80 East from Cuba, AL (Exit 1 off I-59/20) to Montgomery is loaded with construction (2-lane-to-4-lane), traffic lights and slow-moving tractors... This farm country, y'know.
