"Twilight" dentistry in Mexico?

May I offer a suggestion?

Check with your USA doctor first. Tell the doctor exactly what you have in mind. Remember, normal everyday Novocaine contains Epinephrin. Can be DEADLY for folks with cardiac issues. Novocaine without Epinephrin is NOT available in Mexico and no Mexican dentist has experience with the vastly different dosage protocol.

Your USA doctor could offer advice as to the proper sedation medications and dosages custom tailored for you. An MP3 and earbuds really helps me. Turn the volume way up :)

Stop into any drugstore and pick up some Valium. No problem down there.

With twilight sedation I would worry about what they give you. Could be propofol (AKA milk) and without proper training and close monitoring you could be joining Joan Rivers and Michael Jackson.

2oldman: What makes you think that Valium is available at a pharmacy in Mexico? Not so!!! Controlled substances are not sold in pharmacies!

Mexico’s laws governing medicines are similar to those in the United States. Any drug classified as a controlled medicine cannot be purchased in Mexico without a Mexican prescription. This prescription must be written by a Mexican federally registered physician. Purchasing a controlled medicine without a valid prescription in Mexico is a serious crime for both the purchaser and the seller. Purchasing a controlled medicine with a U.S. prescription is not sufficient and is illegal, regardless of what the Mexican pharmacy may be willing to sell to the purchaser. By law, Mexican pharmacies cannot honor foreign prescriptions.

In Mexico, medications such as Valium, Vicodin, Placidyl, Ambien, codeine, pseudoefedrine, Demerol, morphine, and Ativan are not legally sold over-the-counter without a valid prescription from a Mexican physician. If the purchaser succeeds in purchasing controlled medicines without a prescription, Mexican police can arrest the purchaser and vendor and charge them with possession/sale of a controlled substance. The sentence for possession of a controlled substance runs from ten months to fifteen years in a Mexican prison.

Moiseh is right on target. Valium is a Sector Salud Class II medication. By the way if someone EVER finds opioid medications down here stronger than TYLEX, codeine with paracetamol, let me know.

Ask again when you have some idea of where you are going and what your route will be. We do go to a dentist in Mexico and though we have never needed to be put out we could find out. We think our dentist is very good and prices are very reasonable (cheap) and many people we know have gone there and we have heard no complaints - only happy customers.

As far as prescription medication - I am not saying this is legal or that it can be found anywhere but there are doctors who will write a prescription for around $25US. We have also been to a farmacia where if they know you or they know the person who knows you they will give you prescription medication charging you the $25US and then they get a doctor to write the prescription to cover the medication. But this is not something that can be done by just anyone or just anywhere. Controlled substances must be covered by prescription and all are accounted for. Not something for a newbie to attempt. Tylex ,paracetamol and codeine. (500 mg of paracetamol and 30 mg of codeine?)

I believe paracetamol is pretty much the same as acetaminophen. We get something similar over-the-counter in Canada but not sure about Mexico. Acetaminophen 300mg. Caffeine 15mg. Codeine 8mg. (not a brand name item – many manufacturers). Tylex is stronger but you can take more if you know you can handle it. Strength can vary. If they are OTC in Canada they may be in Mexico too.

Also, depends on what you want them for. We also get a medication called Robax OTC in Mexico and Canada (cheaper in Canada) which are specifically for back pain – Metocarbamol 500mg. (muscle relaxer) with either Ibuprofen 200mg. or Acetaminophen 500mg. (may even have aspirin) – can have other brand names and varying strengths of any of the ingredients – but the main ingredient is the Metocarbamol. We have found nothing that works better for back pain.

These are probably prescription in the US but not Canada or Mexico.

Vicodin or similar are stronger but controlled everywhere – the name comes from the roman VI for 6 and codeine – meaning Vicodin is 6 times stronger than codeine. Prescription only.

If this true, why do Americans pour across at Progresso and buy all kinds of medications? I've heard the winter snowbirds do this, directly from a winter snowbird.
