We completed the epic 11,000 mile roundtrip this summer in less than 7 weeks. Absolutely, we would have liked more time but we didn't have it. We had a good trip and really nothing of any significance went wrong. All of our reservations were correct and no flat tires! Our biggest issue was our water pump quit working around Destruction Bay...turns out the plug came loose from that nice smooth stretch of the Alaskan Highway up there ;)
This!!!! I went in 03 in a used 40 footer towing a Dodge neon. 5 weeks total 10k miles. Great trip and can't wait to go back. kids were only 6 and 10, they loved it. JUST GO FOR IT.
You can take 4 months to do it when your retired. But you will have all the memories of this trip between now and then. And getting there is half of the fun.
