The average length of time visitors spend at the South Rim is three hours!
Dick: You constantly state this but where is the backup?
If you're on a big bus tour of foreigners you might find this because they need to fit in five national parks in five days.
However, if you make a definite effort to visit the Grand Canyon you're not going to spend just three hours there unless all you want to do is to stand at the first overlook you see and snap a picture.
The best way for the visit is to stay IN the park itself. Trailer Village RV is the place to stay if you want hookups. Desert View or Mather if you don't need hookups. Go to the Visitor Center and pick up a list of "Things to Do" and three hours won't even touch on it, especially if you have kids. The ranger programs are great and there are lots of easy hiking to do - above the rim and along the rim.
We have returned a half a dozen times and once we hiked down to catch our awesome rafting trip for nine days on the Colorado River.
