We want to park the motorhomes at Red Lodge and just do a day trip from Red Lodge to the Pass.
A suggestion for your consideration - There are actually two great drives that you can do in a one day loop from Red Lodge. The Beartooth Highway continues over the pass to connect to the Chief Joseph Highway. We have done both and actually feel that the mountain scenery is more varied and spectacular along the Chief Joseph. The Chief Joseph goes over the Dead Indian Pass and then down to join route 120 north of Cody. Route 120 north (which becomes route 72 in Montana) will take you to Belfrey, from which you can take route 308 back to Red Lodge. Google Maps has this loop as 143 miles and about 3 hours. Plan on more like 5-6 hours, as you will make many stops to admire the beauty.
IMO the best of the pull offs along the Chief Joseph are at the bridge over the canyon of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River and at the top of Dead Indian Pass.
I agree with this. The Chief Joseph byway is absolutely stunning.
