US 90 vs I-10 across from Louisiana to Florida

Its been several years ago, but I drove west to east on I-10. Most of it is bridges over swamp land and there were holes in it that a horse could fall through. No experience on US 90. BTW, unless you intend to visit New Orleans, the shorter route turns into I-12 just east of Baton Rouge and re-connects with I-10 near Slidell, LA. The "detour" to New Orleans adds about 25 miles to the trip.
