I (barely) remember the days before interstate highways. US-45 was a major route of Chicago to the Gulf coast. Today, much of it is 4-lane and some portions divided 4-lane, plus bypasses have been created around some cities (ie Tupelo, MS and Jackson, Tn) and larger towns. Both in Mississippi and Tennessee US-45 is in great shape and doesn't see a great volume of traffic - I cannot comment on further north.
