US54-US400
On my return trip from the southwest (end of March) I am considering US54 from Vaughn, NM then connect with US400 into Wichita. What is the road like and what about weather for this time of year? ...

US 54 runs right into Wichita. Why not stay on it? 54 isn't a bad road at all. Lots of 2 lane but truckers run it all the time. End of March shouldn't be too much of a worry about the weather.
