Utah, Highway 12 Advice

We are thinking about heading from Bryce Canyon through Torrey on Highway 12. We drove that road in a toad years ago but I don't remember exactly what it was like. The Mountain book describes a pretty hairy road with up to 12% grades. Have any of you guys done it in your RV? What's it like? Thanks.

We were on it a few years ago with our 43ft MH pulling a pickup truck.Fun drive !
  • Awesome road! As already mentioned, not for the faint of heart. But the views are incredible. It is a high pass, pay attention to the weather forecast.
  • If I was going to stay off every road with the scenic label, I would just be driving around in Illinois on their state roads. That place is so flat that counties have to share a hill.
My personal view is the steeper and most crooked are the best roads to see. I have to stop frequently to look around but that is why I am on vacation in the mountains.
  • That's a very scenic road that we've been across multiple times in a couple of different motorhomes. Most recently in our current diesel pusher pulling a Jeep Grand Cherokee (about 58' total). The most intimidating section is probably where the road is along the top of a hogback ridge. It drops off sharply on both side of the road. It is also a bit of a climb up over the pass on Boulder mountain and descent down the other side to Torrey.

  • its a very good road that shouldn't be missed, one small section called the hogs back runs down the top of a ridge with a drop off on both sides.
  • I seek out and drive ANY road labeled “scenic” whether towing or not.
  • We did it 5 years back with a 43 foot and enjoyed it. Very beautiful. Its not for the faint of heart. Would we do it again. Yes

Now 550 out of New Mexico into Colorado, again beautiful but not for the very faint of heart. No
