The Peak-to-Peak is one way to go and certainly scenic. It's not the only way to go. You could also take I-70 to US 6 east of Idaho Springs and take US 6 in to Golden. In Golden, you could take CO 72/93 north to Boulder and pick up CO 7/US 36 in Boulder, taking that north through Lyons, and then US 36 up to Estes Park.
This would not be my pick of routes. Driving through Boulder mid-week means a lot of in-town, busy traffic. Personally, I'd select the Peak to Peak route. Great scenery and you avoid city traffic.
