Verizon opened service in Alaska last year but it's only 4G service. They didn't want to waste money on additional equipment to support 3G - their answer was for the locals to buy a new phone. Their 4G equipment is in Anch, Fbks, Juneau and maybe Eagle River. So if you buy a 4G phone from them in Alaska, it's fine if you don't go out of town.... Even though I have a new Verizon phone that I didn't really want, I'm about to also buy an ATT phone so that I can use it up the highway between Anch and Fkbs so that I can communicate with people.
And if you have a Galaxy Note 4 4G phone, it will work on Verizon's Alaska network, but don't worry if it works strangely. Verizon doesn't sell them in Alaska because they built this system different than the rest of their stateside systems. Yayyy Verizon.........
Having said that, if you're from out of state, I think they're letting you roam on GCI who bought out ACS' system.
