Vermillion cliffs

Has anyone went here and where did you stay this is part of a trip from Moab to Zion to grand canyon to the vermillion cliffs then monument valley and in that order from Zion on
  • We were on House Rock valley Road last June and saw several nesting California Condors soaring above the cliffs when w estopped at the kiosk about the condors. It is a beautiful drive, but 4x4 is probably recommended. We did see other vehicles not 4x4 high clearance but probably shook the heck out of them. It passes by the Coyote Buttes area which both now require limited permits to hike within that area. You can also access the Wire pass area there, I think.
  • Hi from AZ. . . F.Y.I., on Sept 27th, the Peregrine folks are releasing a couple of California Condors at their release sight on House Rock Rd, a couple of miles off US 89A between Lees Ferry & Jacob Lake. If you're in the area ! regards, Craig
  • Oh, one more thing ... at Zion, be aware that any high clearance RV (over 10'?)must be escorted thru the tunnel on Rt.9 at an additional cost. When we were there, some years ago, it was $20. After normal park hours you can drive thru on U'r own, BUT BE CAREFUL to drive down middle line of the road so not to scrap the right top edge of U'r RV. Oncoming traffic can be a problem if someone must stop & back out.
  • You can find a couple of places to boondock on House Rock Valley Road. There is also a campground (state Line I think). There is also a campground near the Ranger Station. I saw spots at the Paria Movie set area (very beautiful area) and someone was camping there but I am unsure if boondocking or paid.

It all depends on what you are driving/towing, what the weather is like or going to be, and how confident you are in your skill set as to whether you can get to some of these locations. Beautiful area though. We did end up spending some time in Wahweap camping on Lake Powell if you need full hookups. They were pretty nice and most has a great view.
  • You didn't state your intention for the Vermillion Cliffs area. However, it's not something you can easily see. You need to do strenuous hikes to get the the beautiful areas you might have seen picture of such as 'The Wave' hike (which we've done). It takes a lot of persistence and advance planning to get a spot in the lottery to hike The Wave. If you take 89A from Zion to Jacob Lake to Grand Canyon North Rim and on to the South Rim it goes through some beautiful vista areas of the red rock, especially if the lighting is good, but you just can't drive within the Vermillion Cliffs. Have a good trip!

Here's a site for the Cliffs: Vermillion Cliffs

If you want to do The Wave you will need to register for the lottery in Kanab, Utah at the BLM office.
  • From Moab to Zion (don't know Y anyone would leave Moab area) I hope U go down Rt.24 thru Capital Reef Nat'l Pk. Fruita RV pk., 1st come 1st serve, in Cap. Reef is very nice, but water only. and than down Utah, Rt.12 (Nat;l Scenic Byway)Escalante St.Pk. pass Kodachrome, Bryce Canyon (Ruby's Inn Rv Pk) and down to North Rim. The Canyons Nat'l Pk cg is very nice, but water only. As for the Vermillion cliffs, I'd go to Page and stay at Wahweap RV resort. Wonder, full hookup, paved, large sites with great views of the lake. A very good place to go on 'Day Trips' to explore the area like the AMAZING dam & bridge & the world famous Antelope Slot canyon. From Page down Rt.98 to Rt.160 & 163 to Monument valley. All very nice hyways. Goulding is a decent place. U didn't say what U'r driving, But if any kind of a fairly high clearance vehicle, be sure to do the self guided loop road thru the spires. Buy Native Jewelry down in the valley along this road not at the extremely high priced Visitors center/store.
  • At Zion stay in the Watchman CG inside the park. For $18 a day you get 30 amp service along with all the other normal amenities. Heading to the North Rim I recommend The USFS CG Jacob Lake. From there the Rim is an easy 47 mile day trip. Leaving Jacob Lake takes you down the mountain and past the Vermillon Cliffs.

Lee's Ferry Cg at the Colorado River is another nice stop but watch the weather. From there Monument valley is an easy drive, most folks stay at Goulding's(pricey but nice location and amenities). PM me if you would like more info.
