It has been over 20 years since I did the Hwy 190 route from Ft Davis to Waco (well Temple), and about 2 years since taking Hwy 290 west out of Austin to Ft Davis. Fuel stops options are not that far between, particularly on I-10 just don't let it get below 1/4 of a tank and you should be ok. There is a small town every 40 or 50 miles, and often truck stops in between on I-10. Maybe a bit less on Hwy 190. Personally I like the drive from Balmorea to Ft Davis on Hwy 17, is is narrower than Hwy 67 or 385, but not too bad, and FAR more scenic as it twists its way through the mountains (I think 45 or 50 mph speed limit). Speaking of speed limit, the section of I-10 is 85 mph.
