Yes it works in both directions. In Canada, US citizens can for example be in big trouble if they try to carry a gun in. In CAnada therE is a TV series called Border Patrol on NatGeo. Not sure if it is carried in the US, but it shows what can happen trying to enter Canada. Very useful, you get tips on how to smuggle successfully, LOL.
I remember one guy in Mexico, whose wife had to drive their RV across the US each year, because he got caught with pot at 18 years old. he was a successful 70 year old businessman, but still unable to enter the US. Both my step son and his wife have drug convictions. He is banned, she is not. She is status Indian. so cannot be banned.
