This is correct. If you are only traveling one way, and not round trip, you pay at the port you are leaving from.
If going during the Summer months, it is much easier to purchase your fare on line, as far in advance as they allow, which I believe is 60 days.
When you do it online, you have the option to pay round trip, or one way.
