Washington to Alaska on Ferry

Can anyone tell me approximate cost and which port to enter Alaska if we leave from Washington and do not want to enter Canada at all.

We want to go from a Washington port to an Alaska port with our RV and drive Alaska, then return ... least expensive way - not fancy cabin or whatever. We'll stay in the RV if allowed.

Our RV is a GMC 4x4 with Truck camper - about 21 feet total.

I've tried to work the web pages for ferries, but can't quite figure out the best way to do this. Thanks
  • But,to address your question..I ran a quote from Bellingham, Wa, July9th, to Juneau. I put your ages at 56/60.No pets, no bikes, no kayaks at 24ft,7ft high at 103 inches wide. These were questions asked to complete and submit.

Fare was 209.00, one way. That should give you an idea of cost.

  • Not allowed to stay in RV. Can not run fridge (have to have propane off). Can go down to the vehicle once or twice a day, too feed pets, add ice to fridge, etc. I've not gone via the Ferry, but have looked into doing so.

The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry, I was thinking of, would be out of Bellingham. You may check Fares by Clicking Here. I've looked for departing in Canada, but it seems one must drive a long ways up & do a good looping curve to get to a port.

When I last looked it as Bellingham to Haines: $353 per person, VEHICLES UP TO 10' $462, Up to 15' $797, Up to 19' $947, etc. as you get longer or higher. Cabin Rates would vary from $337-$393 for two berths. Or one can just sleep on deck or somewhere for free. They also have height restrictions with fees as well.

Remember, once you get to Haines, one must drive into Canada to get to the rest of Alaska via highways. Seems like it is about 600 miles or so to either Fairbanks or the Alaska border. Most in Canada.

I'm sure one can get a vehicle by ferry to Whittier (not a long drive to Anchorage from there), & I have found it before, but it is hard to find. Not sure why. Didn't see it listed when just looking.

Here's something on the Ferry to Whittier. For prices or Fares to Haines, & this one To Whittier.

The Alaska Ferries often have a special, driver gets to go free if using round trip on them.

Good luck with your goal of going, it is really neat. All the prices & looking was done last year or later by me. ^

Seems Bellingham to Whittier woud be Car or R.V. up to 21' $1882.00
Car or R.V. over 21' $104.60 per Foot
    Plus fees for passengers:
    Adults 12+ $547.00
    Adults 65+ $470.00
    A place to sleep:
    Roomette - 2-berth - Inside (No Facilities) $130.00
    Roomette - 2-berth - Outside (No Facilities) $156.00

This :C Link Clicky has a couple of photos of Whittier.

*Bellingham: Customers who wish to be added to the waitlist for vehicle space departing from Bellingham can call the Bellingham terminal directly at 1-360-676-8445 and leave a message, staff will return phone calls as soon as possible. Bellingham terminal office hours of operation are Monday 9:00am-3:00pm, Thursday 9:00am-4:30pm, Friday 8:00am-6:00pm and when there is a cross-gulf sailing, Saturday 8:00am-6:00pm.

**Whittier: Passengers traveling to and from Whittier are advised to check the Whittier Tunnel web site for a schedule of when the tunnel is open to vehicle traffic. You may be unable to make your sailing if you do not arrive at the tunnel at a time when it is open. Bicycle and foot traffic is prohibited through the tunnel, and there are vehicle size and other restrictions of which you should be aware before traveling through the tunnel. For a recording of the base schedule, call the Whittier Tunnel toll-free at (877) 611-2586.

Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel ~ Whittier, AK Seems to have a fee going to Whittier, but not coming from Whittier. We only paid going to Whittier.

Bellingham to Haines is less expensive: Car or R.V. over 21' $67.20 per Foot
    Adults 12+ $353.00 --- Adults 65+ $325.00
    Roomette - 2-berth - Inside (No Facilities) $82.00
    Roomette - 2-berth - Outside (No Facilities) $92.00

But as I mentioned one will have to drive into Canada to get to the highways of Alaska from Haines. Just need pass ports to do this and no handguns.

There seems to be an 800 number to call as well as on line: 1 800 382 9229
  • Here is one fo many sites with information. If you need more do a search for transporting rv on ferry to alaska. Prices depend on where you want to leave from and which port you want to arrive at.
