GMaps has streetview only for the end near Hill City. From the Sat View, West Deerfield appears to be gravel (no painted center line), while Deerfield and S. Rochford appear to be paved.
Malo Rd near 4 corners also appears to be gravel with similar width.
If I'm right, that's about 20 miles of gravel, and 20 paved.
The route via US16 is longer, but has the same time estimate, implying higher average speed.
