What is wrong with New Mexico??

In conjunction with my Rand McNally road atlas, I use the Rand Motor Carrier's Guide. The state of New Mexico has very few approved roads for the motor carriers. I have been through NM once on I-10 many years ago. But...

now I am planning a trip from Raton to Espanola via Taos and find the safest route is I-25 to Santa Fe then US 285 north. The maps both show State Route 68 as a shorter route has anyone travelled this route.

38' Class A motorhome w/TOAD being used.

Thanks

  • Have towed our 5er over numerous NM roads and all the ones we traveled were good. Not sure I understand the concern.

    Maybe height of bridges?
  • We've been down 68 and had no problems. Most NM roads are fine and generally in good condition. Over the years we have traveled up and down many of them, including lots of minor roads. The only roads I recall being steep and switchedbacked are north of Silver City. One of the roads to Gila Cliffs in particular had a length limit.

Taos by the way is a real PITA to drive thru. Our cell phones didn't have a signal either.
