I don’t really want to keep this line of comment going but it is the issue of safety in Mexico has been brought up as a reason not to go – so some personal observations……..
Anyone who has traveled in Mexico knows there are many police and military roadblocks where vehicles are stopped making every attempt to stop criminals from transporting illegal substances to the US.
The chopper that crossed the border and “allegedly” fired on US Border Patrol was in pursuit of illegal activities and accidentally crossed the border by a very short distance. The border in many areas in “invisible” in the sense there is almost no way to know where it is. The law enforcement agents in that chopper and many other Mexican law enforcement agents and military work very hard trying to “secure the border” between Mexico and the US working in joint operations with US law enforcement. The suggestion that the Mexican Gov’t is participating in helping illegals cross the border seems a bit absurd.
Traveling in our RV we have TV feeds from both NYC and LA and watch news casts from both coasts nightly – as well as national news. The story about the Mexican chopper did not appear on any TV news cast we observed. This seems to be an isolating incident few news programs found important enough to cover. Other “secure the border” incidents of both Mexican and US law enforcement and military have crossed this “invisible” border many times over many years.
Almost all killings in Mexico are drug smugglers killing each other over routes they use to smuggle drugs into the US. This is due to the Mexican Gov’t “War on Drugs” that has been going on since 2006 (and longer). Mexican law enforcement and military have closed off many routes so there are fewer and fewer routes for smugglers to use. This has caused a war between the cartels to use those few routes that remain. They kill each other in their war over the routes. This has nothing to do with tourists – they only kill each other.
Those of us who travel in Mexico and have been doing so for many years know that Mexico is relatively safe and that criminal activities rarely (if ever) have anything to do with us.
