While posting this topic will alert pet owners about the possibility of losing their pet food crossing the border, there is no guarantee that your pet food won't be taken no matter what it is or where you got it.
In the past when beef was a concern we lost our dog food because "it could have been made on the same processing line as..." Bottom line is that the border person has the ability to make these arbitrary decisions and there isn't anything you can do about it. Best thing that can happen is that they allow you to take a meal or two worth of the food to allow you time to buy replacement food once you cross the border
