- chipsterExplorerHow many hours should I set aside for The Alexander Graham Bell Museum? Could I do this on a drive by on our way to Mira River provincial park?
- chipsterExplorerSo much to do in short time. Fortress Of Louisbourg I hear is a must on the list too. Pet friendly I wonder?
On edit Lol. Just read the whole post above this one - daveB110ExplorerWhile on Cape Breton, Beddeck, the "Cradle of Canadian Aviation" has the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. Inside is the old plane that is the first to fly in Canada, over the ice covered lake in front. As well, there is a hydrofoil that set a world speed record for boats, about 72 MPH, in the early 1920's. The life of the great Scottish inventor is well documented here.
Out on the Cabot Trail, one can stop at the Glenora Distillery for lunch and enjoy the music they have in the afternoons. They distill whiskey that resembles the Scotch of the Old Country. The 19 year old, if they still have it, was $300 a bottle while we were there in 2014, from the first year they distilled; a sampler of more recent, is much less.
Louisburg is a must visit, with a long history, but with new buildings than resemble the old fort the French used to guard the St.Lawerance for many decades before the English finally took the Fort. - daveB110ExplorerFor a campground that is not too far out of the way to Pegggy's Cove, Lunenburg and even Halifax, Hubards is a choice we made. A small town, great farmers market, and a big restaurant that serves later in the evening as a dance hall, close by to the Campground.
We didn't do the Annapolis Valley, and visit the Fundy shore nearby, but saw the tidal area from the opposite shores, with a campground at Five Islands. This is all in Nova Scotia. Highest tides in the world are in that area. Farther down the road, Cape d'Or is a nice drive on a secondary road. The tidal race on outflow shows white water a mile out to sea, and a restaurant is now part of the lighthouse compound. - YZExplorerI guess you have to define what the Cabot trail is. All our scenic routes are names something or other. For instance, on top of the Cabot trail, we have (not a complete list):
Ceilidh Trail
Bras d'Or Lakes Scenic Drive
Digby Neck and Islands
Evangeline Trail
Fleur-de-Lis Trail
Glooscap Trail
Lighthouse Route
Marconi Trail
Marine Drive
Sunrise Trail.
But you are looking for what everyone talks about ? That would be what is in the nation park.. I attached an image. Absolutely breathtaking scenery..especially when the colours begin to change..
The speed is really up to you. The last time I did it I stopped to each and do a few shops..I also followed off the trail to find several waterfalls. I parked myself at the end and then did the loop in a day. - VeebyesExplorer IIRe Cabot Trail, even doing a short northern loop is a full day by the time you stop, & actually get out of the vehicle to admire the view & take some pictures at the many viewpoints.
And no, don't even think about dragging your house behind you. Some of the hills are nasty. - chipsterExplorerDoesn't it go around the whole island? I mapped it and its over 500 KM, that seems like a long day with stops.
- YZExplorerYou can drive the trail comfortably (and stop to sight see) in less than a day..
I wouldn't tow a rig around there..there are some steep hills :)
YZ.. - chipsterExplorerIf we were to try and take in some of the Cabot trail, what section should we look at? Say 2 day max in the area, arrive explore a little first night then drive some the trail second day, then leave the following morning over to Peggy's cove area.
Thinking you don't want to tow trailer around the trail? - VeebyesExplorer IIThanks Woodhog. Left with a touigh choice on same weekend. Antigonish Highland Games, mainly the music, or Rock the Lobster festival in Pictou.
Leaning more to the highland games. We have enjoyed the games at Richmond, VA twice & at Stone Mtn, Atlanta,Ga once.
