If you are heading up in August, I would go up on the Cassiar and return on the Alaska Highway for a couple of reasons. First, the bear viewing is best when the salmon run. The Hyder run is better in August than October. Second, with the chance of serious weather in October, I think you would be safer on the more traveled road.
