Which first - the Cassiar or the Alcan?

We're planning a Seattle to Alaska and back trip for the summer of 2015. I read through the 2013 roll call thread's summary and am reading the 2014 one now, but since I haven't come across the info I need, I figured I might as well start a new dedicated thread.

We'll be leaving Seattle in early August (probably around August 1). We need to be back in Seattle by October 2. That gives us two full months for the trip, but it also means the second part will be in September.

I noticed most RV'ers go up the Alcan and then come back via the Cassiar. Considering our trip back will be in mid-September, I wonder if maybe we should do the opposite.

I *think* that weather-wise, the further you are inside the continent it's going to be colder? So it makes more sense taking the more western route during mid-September? We're from Israel and have little experience with driving in the snow or on icy roads, so I think it might be better to try and avoid those.

Also, we want to try and see the Hyder bears. From what I'm reading, their salmon run begins mid-July and ends in mid-September. It sounds like our chances of seeing the bears are better if we're there in mid-August than in mid-September.

Thoughts?

  • don't miss going to Hyder we were there 2 years ago in late Aug. I believe the road is now paved in Hyder. What a shame is a unique and beautiful spot. Saw many bears both black and brown.
