Which Route is Best 93 or 95

We are planning a trip from Kelowna, BC to Palm Springs at the end of March and we like to go down through Idaho and then use 93 or 95?

Which route would be the best one to take to Palm Springs?
  • We drove 95 between Boise and Winnemucca on our way to Carson City about 7 years ago, and it is pretty desolate in that stretch. The roadway was generally in good shape, iirc, but there's not much else out there except desert.
  • I've driven bits and pieces of 95 in northern Idaho. Lots of towns and vacation areas. At Lewiston it drops down a good grade to the Snake River level, climbs again to Granger, and another drop at Whitebird (Salmon River). Then a gradual climb to New(something or other). McCall to the east is vacation area around a big lake. 95 to the west and south crosses a dryer area, and then enters the farming lands around the Ontario and Boise.

From there south 95 is in semi-desert, to Jordan Valley (a Basque community) and into pretty remote parts of Oregon and Nevada. I'm less sure about the Nevada stretch. I think you cut off some corner. Much of it is the main route between Reno and Vegas.

93 goes to the Kalispell area, the west side of Glacier NP, then Missoula. Then a string of towns and a climb to Lost Trail Pass on the stateline. Then a drop to Salmon, ID (the other end of the Salmon River). Then through broad valleys to the Snake River plain. Then Twin Falls and on to Nevada (at lot of the employees at the casino in NV live in Twin Falls). 93 seems to be a favorite alternative to I15 for Albertans heading south to Vegas.

I suspect in Nevada 93 and 95 are similar in quality, scenery, and services. They differ more in north, several deep river crossings versus one big pass.
  • We like to take I84 and cut off on Hwy 30 along the snake river, but it looks like 95 cuts off before that.

We will try the 95 and then cut over to 395 into California.

We like the scenic routes best.

Life is too short to be in a hurry.

    Thanks
  • Where are you starting out from in Idaho?

Having done both to and from the Boise area I think 93 is a little bit easier and faster but 95 is a more scenic route and it bypasses Vegas if you don't want to deal with that (although it's no big deal to get through). On the latter I like to cut west at Hawthorne over to 395 near Mono Lake just for the scenery from there south until you get out into the desert.
