Whitehorse Walmart is going to ban overnight RV parking

Camp Wal-Mart in Whitehorse will be no more by the end of the summer.

Local store officials confirm to the RUSH, the plan is to put up signs prohibiting overnight Recreational Vehicle parking and camping in their lot at the end of August.

Management says they have received a number of customer complaints about having to dodge massive RV's while trying to park, and there's been a lot of garbage left behind.

Wal-Mart's policy on overnight RV parking varies from store to store, and management says many stores across Canada are moving to no overnight camping in their lots.

    I agree with Jebby14 that it has nothing to do with being cheap. I very rarely park at Walmart (3 times in 3 years), but I bought a fully self-contained self-sufficient rig so I only need services once a week or so and can camp where ever I choose. For me, going to a commercial campground is usually a waste of money unless they have some killer location.

    I have visited that Walmart a few times while staying at Pioneer Village CG, and it was a mess. However, I do use Walmarts for overnighters often.

    For me, my first night of camping is usually parking overnight for a few hours at a Wal-Mart.

    I don't have the luxury of unlimited paid time off, so I'm leaving after work and after dinner, drive for 5-6 hours and park at midnight. The next morning i'm up at dawn, quick bite to eat and drive the rest of the way to a paid campground.

    I also don't have the luxury of scheduling things a year in advance, I work around other peoples schedules. So when I have a gap in the calendar that I can go RVing for a few days, I'm not going to bother making reservations for a midnight arrival at a campground (if there's even one near the overnight location) just for 4-5 hours of sleep before hitting the road again.

    I've been to the Whitehorse W several times, and it's a shame that so many there were abusing the privilege - slides out, generators running, grills cooking ... living out of a W parking lot is not fair to the store or the surrounding neighborhood.

    I don’t there would have been an issue if people used the WM like you do. But when they’re grilling, slides out, etc., that’s no longer catching a few winks, it is...well, it’s something, but I wouldn’t call it camping. The article mentions that some campgrounds closed due to the WM opening up. Now there’s even fewer places for people to stay!

    My friend told me that CA used to allow overnight roadside parking along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway.

    But with the garbage and pee, they don't anymore.

    I've read the same for the Alcan, but every gravel lot and pull off I pulled into had plenty of signage, NO OVERNIGHT.

    Only in BC did I find overnight allowed at official government rest areas, but those were sparse.

    If I arrived after midnight local time, would it still be overnight?

    maybe wal mart should start charging a small fee, I,d have no problem paying for a few hours sleep.

    I am not sure if the big vacant lot adjacent to Walmart is still there. It was much easier to park there then in Walmart's lot. Some Truckers were parked there last trip up.

    If their parking is huge and not busy, they usually allow it.

    Our neigborhood Walmart is spill over overnight parking for the Speedway while the other one with smaller parking lot 2 miles away does not.

    Would you have a problem if I pulled into your yard at midnight to grab a few hours sleep? I'm never in that much of a hurry to start my vacation.:R It is not always the store's decision, often municipal ordinances don't permit boondocking in city limits.

    NO OVERNIGHT signs are rare in northern BC and the Yukon.
