Wyoming 85/270 and 387/59

first off thanks for any and all reply's. We're planning our summer trip this year into Wyoming then South Dakota. Anyone have info on south bound Wyoming 85 onto 270 to I25 into Cheyenne? How's the road, gas, climbs etc. We're planning on using I25 to Casper and then 387/59 to pick up Devils tower on the north bound leg to Spearfish, SD. Any information or suggestions on these routes would be appreciated.

thank
Dave

  • Hwy 85 is fine all the way, as is Hwy 59. 387 is getting a little rough in spots, otherwise a good road. I usually turn off of 387 onto Hwy 50 and take that into Gillette. The road isn't better, but there's less traffic and it's a little shorter. It leads directly to Gillette's west interchange with I-90.

Most of Wyoming's secondary roads are well maintained.
I use the 387/59 route frequently going north and south, and its all good roads. Some days you'll run into some large truck traffic at certain hours, but lots of places to pass.
Wy 85 is also good all the way from Newcastle to Cheyenne. I've never used 270 its more of a tertiary road.
One caution in that area of Wy during summer months, is watch out for the many antelope grazing back and forth along the highways.

thanks Jim. Been many years since we were in Wyoming so I thought I would inquire here.
