We just returned from this area this past week. We stayed at a campground located in Fonthill (about 20 minutes from the falls) called Bissell's Hideaway. It was a large campground and had all the amenities (i.e. large pool, goofy golf, zip lines, rock climbing, etc for the kids). Everything cost money though... We enjoyed our stay there and also enjoyed being 20 minutes from the falls in the evenings (our escape from the crowds)! The only concern with Bissell's was the route there and maneuvering within the campground. If you have a large RV you may want to inquire first. I found the streets a bit narrow and the access roads from the highway a bit narrow with steep hills which weren't the most RV friendly.
If you plan to head to the falls, I found an ideal place for parking as well. We parked directly behind the Niagara IMAX theater. There is a parking lot adjacent to hotel which is now closed which charges $4 for all day parking. The lot was empty enough that there were several RV's parked there with decent space to maneuver. It is within walking distance to the falls and adjacent to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville restaurant.
While in the falls, be sure to check out the following (our family really enjoyed these attractions):
-Oh Canada Eh dinner show (located on Lundy's Lane)
-The butterfly conservatory (located near bridge street, near the whirlpool).
We found that on weekdays the falls wasn't too crowded. However on weekends the crowds were heavy.
Good luck and enjoy the trip!
