In 2012 we left Yosemite via the Tioga Pass Road and headed south on US 395. Headed toward Las Vegas, our GPS suggested we head east on CA-168 from Big Pine to Oasis. It was a beautiful, scenic road that passes near the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, and it seemed we had the road to ourselves. Thank goodness for that, because as we ascended through a canyon that got narrower and narrower, the highway becomes a one-lane road for probably a few hundred feet or so. That definitely caught us by surprise, but it wasn't as surprising as finding out at the Nevada border that the road was closed 40 miles beyond that point due to flooding, and we had to reroute all the way up to US 6! It was frustrating at the time, but made for a story that I find myself typing for people I don't really know three years later.
