Yuma to Austin, Texas

We'll be driving from Yuma, AZ to Austin, Texas. Can you suggest places to stay, things to do along the way? We like to avoid staying in big cities. We are looking for 1 or 2 night stop-overs. Boondocking would be fine. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.
Leslie
  • The trip is 1091 miles, assuming you are taking I-10. With only one or two stops, I doubt you'd have a lot of time to sight-see. If I were doing this trip I'd stay one night at Picacho Peak SP in AZ and one in Balmorhea SP in west TX.
  • Kartchner caverns at benson is worth a look.
balmorhea state park and ft Davis and McDonald observatory all close enough together for a couple or 3 days.
Fredericksburg TX is a great town to spend a day or two. A great museum of ww2 in the pacific
  • SKP Park in Benson, not a SKP? I think they have a special going on for non members. East View RV Ranch Georgetown, TX.

X2 on Balmorhea SP. Also, be sure to take the cut off on 290 through Fredricksburg during daylight hours. They breed some of the dumbest deer in the world in that part of Texas, and they all like to hang out on the road at dawn and dusk!
  • You didn't say when you are going to Austin. Balmorrhea is an excellent stop. It is at desert level and the campground is not shaded and has water and electric. the main attraction at Balm. is the spring fed swimming pool; you can swim with the fishes. If you are traveling during the warmer months, you might consider Davis Mtn. state park, right outside of Ft. Davis (about 30 miles from Balm. and more alpine; water, elect, full hookups). There is also a lodge with a restaurant at DMSP; also near McDonald Observatory.
