Our favorite time to go to south rim of GC is September. We have been there numerous times and have only experienced near perfect weather. I don't think we ever had to use air cond. The most extreme weather we experienced was a rain shower as we were finishing our hike up Bright Angel....very welcome. We did see an amazing electrical storm but it was in the distance. The crowds are lighter in Sept ....the shuttle buses are efficient-they drop you off at one overlook and when you are done oohing and ahhing and taking pictures you just wait for the next shuttle to pick you up and take you on to the next overlook. Don't think we ever waited more than 10 mins that timemof year.We are going back in Sept, too, but staying at Maswik Lodge this time instead of taking the 5er.
One last thing....you are safe wearing hiking shorts but carry light jacket for early morn. If you want to see a sunrise I suggest you wear long pants, warm jacket. It can get really cold that early in morning. I learned the hard way. Have fun!!!
