We usually will do State Parks online and do site specific. Michigan and Arizona show photos of the site and that helps. While traveling we will call ahead when 4 hours out and have either made and paid the site or at least have an assurance of a site.
In season, AZ and FL, I always make a reservation while out of season I will call ahead to see if that is needed.
For our seasonal site we pay a deposit a year ahead and need to see the site before reserving This is always done in person.
Have not had alot of experience with very small parks, 10 to 40 sites, so always do them by phone.
