I am so old I can remember pulling off to the side of the road just about anyplace in American and camping for free. It was rare for anyone to say anything. Except maybe in places like on the beach at Miami.
Of course there was no 80X20 foot manicured pull through campsite, with Sewer, water, 50 amp service, cable TV and wifi. Swimming pool, gym and rec room.
I do not recall one campground on route 66 in the 50's. Might have been some but Dad would never have spent 50¢ to stay in one!
Sorry you missed the good old days!
I guess it just takes different things to make people feel superior. One of them must be avoiding KOA's. I don't care for KOA's, but I don't care for Wally Worlds either. Or camping by the side of the road, or parking in church parking lots, or Cracker Barrel parking lots. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
I guess some just have that need to feel superior, no matter how they go about it.
