Seems like you'd be better off hitting Chaco Canyon on your way out. Don't go all the way south to Albuquerque, but take US-64 through Taos.
Then on the way back from Bryce you can swing north on US 163 to see Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, Goosenecks SP, and Mesa Verde. There's also Hovenweep (more ruins) to consider. From Mesa Verde you have a scenic drive through Pagosa Springs and over Wolf Creek Pass on your way to Pueblo.
Of course, you didn't mention time of year you are traveling. Weather is a factor in all of this.
