I know of 11 people that died in 1997 and there's been others over the years because of flash flooding. In the 97 incident the rain fell more than 10 miles away so those in the canyon were unaware of the pending flood approaching. Incredible place but also dangerous and deadly.
No one was injured in the August 2nd flood, but I have no idea how fast the area recovered. Large portions of 89 were sand covered.
If you go, be sure to see Horseshoe Bend, a couple of miles south of Page on 89.
