Just wondering if its best to drive around it, or is there any sites worth seeing in the city?
The LDS temple square is well worth a visit.
If the city is not for you you may enjoy the Mountains around SLC - all the ski resorts are fun year round if you are into people things, really a beautiful area.
If not we always try to Catch Dinosaur NM and Flaming Gorge when coming up from the South, meandering in on Rt 89 into Alpine and then through Jackson.
But if SLC is on your route the Temple Square and the Choir rehersal are something you will never forget. We took the Kids one year at Christmas when skiing - then it became an annual tradition for the next 10 years, Impressive.
