As stated by "the bear II" April is the turning of the seasons on the coast, as the valley warms up it pulls cool air off the ocean (fog), So it can be iffy, But still beautiful.
I would suggest renting a motor home and camping/rving up the coast.. There are some very nice campgrounds right on the coast with beautiful views.
Take HWY 1 as far north as you want and come back HWY 101 or 5.
There is a lot of California history along the coast, a lot of logging and mining history further north. Also, dont know how far you plan to travel, but Oregon has some wonderful coastal camp grounds!!
Try "google Earth" then study the towns and cities along your route, there is a ton of information on internet.
Hotels/motels/cabins plus rental car will be just as expensive as a motor home..
Spend some time on the internet,, I would give you my take on towns I have seen and visited, but then again my likes and interest are different than yours..
One other suggestion,, Google "Huell Howser's welcome to California's gold!!
He spent countless time on the coast documenting it's history and heritage!!
We spent one summer on a Huell Road Trip" Had a ton of fun and learned allot about CA..
good luck, enjoy!!
