Earlier this year we did a little road trip with the DGD, we have traveled up and down the coast since the 60s' but never really looked at everything, it was a "get the heck out of Dodge thing". With the DGD along we stopped at a lot of places we had passed and wanted to see but never did. One day we took 10 hours to make a 90 mile drive. I mention this because there really is a lot to do and see on the coast.
Flying into SFO rather than Monterey would be cheaper, you can drive to Monterey and back easily in a day, won't be able to stop much but you will save a lot of money. From San Francisco(all you City people take note, I wrote out San Francisco, not Frisco or some other slang, it's Los Angeles too, not La La Land)north is as fantastic as from Los Angeles North. Plan on stopping a lot. From the Redwoods a great side trip is Ferndale, great Victorian town.
Just remember there are several weeks of things to see and do up there. And I have to agree the BRMs are unbelievable and we can't wait to go back and explore more.
