Coastal weather can be chilly, windy, and damp at any time of year. It is still worth going, but you might want to allow extra time for waiting for fog to lift.
Beauty: everywhere! Bodega Head, Trinidad bay, Mendocino, Pt. Reyes National Seashore, etc etc etc.
Sadly, Huell Howser has passed on. He left his trip reports to Chapman University for free viewing online. What a wonderful gift! http://blogs.chapman.edu/huell-howser-archives/
I agree 100%. We were in Los Angeles a couple years ago in August. It only got up around in the 70s while at the beach. The water was cold. We stayed in Agoura hills, which is just across the mountains from Malibu and it got up to maybe 80 there. I would suspect April and further north to be chillier. I've only been up to the San Francisco area one time and that was at the end of May and 21 years ago. I do remember it being cool then.
