I also agree about looking into flying into either Oakland (OAK), San francisco (SFO) or San Jose (SJC). The round trip vs drop off of a rental car can add up to quite a difference.
Also if you're thinking of going to Yosemite and staying IN the park look for reservations NOW. Yosemite reservations It's about a 3-4 hour drive from the bay area to the valley floor.
