Atlanta GA

Hello, we are new to camping and looks like our first location will be Atlanta GA. Has anyone had any experience in this area ? If so park location and information would be most helpful. Looks like we will be there for about a month. Thank you in advance.
  • Wow, thank you all for the responses. All great information and will follow up on all of them. We are not sure yet of the job location but will certainly take the advise of staying close & checking out surroundings. Thank you again for all the information. We took our camper out this past weekend for a trial run and all worked great so looking forward to being on the road.
  • Where ever you decide to stay do a google street view of the place and check this link out first. Waaay too many places in and around Atlanta that are NOT a safe place to be.

If where I am thinking of staying is a hot spot of murders, assaults, shootings and stabbings in the area of a CG I don't stay there! :W

I'll add Red Top Mtn State Park on the NW side.

As mentioned, traffic can be very bad so getting something on the side you plan on being on the most will help greatly with you sanity.

10-4 on the traffic. After 18 years living west of there and working downtown, getting out of there felt like a release from imprisonment.
My favorite part of Atlanta is the road out. The best view of it is getting smaller in the rear view mirror.

Do stay close to where you are working, there is no good time for traffic anymore.

And good luck on getting away from there.

If you like COE parks we highly recommend Duckett Mill on Lake Sidney Lanier!

The only problem with the Lake Lanier COE CGs (as we have discovered when hoping to visit relatives who live at the lake) is that most of them are not open year-round. Duckett Mill closes this year In mid-September.
  • We stayed at Stone Mtn once, and was our least favorite campground we've ever been to. If you are coming for work, the work location will really determine where you stay. 2+ hours to get across town is common. There are way to many people in this town, traffic kills the quality of life here.

There are COE parks on all the lakes here, and all the ones I've been to are really nice. Also some great state parks. Again if commuting that will determine your options.

We also liked Stone Mountain when we visited (2012) but along with price I'll offer a couple other cautions. 1) if you do wind up at Stone Mountain make sure you get a site in the shade. Those sites in the loop around the pool get sun almost the whole day and your A/C may struggle keeping your unit cool. 2) related to #1 is electrical issues. During heavy usage (and let's face it - it's always hot in Georgia) the voltage at the pedestal will dip. Ours got down to 108; I was considering unplugging if it dropped any further. Fortunately it did not.

Yep, traffic around Atlanta is very, very heavy. Allow lots of time.

  • From your post, it appears to me that you will be working somewhere. If that is the case, define that location, as commuting in Atlanta is horrendous. Stone Mountain is great, but somewhat pricey on the East side, Twin Lakes RV Park on the North Side, Atlanta RV Resort on the South side, and Sweetwater Creek RV Resort on the West side.
  • We always stay at Stone Mountain Park. This is the one I would recommend.
