Avoid Flagstaff, AZ KOA

Copy of letter I sent to KOA headquarters in Billings, MT:

Flagstaff KOA reservation timeline

6/28/13 1600hrs. reserved space #17 for late arrival at Flagstaff KOA
6/28/13 2330hrs. arrived to find space #17 blocked by Dodge pickup using reservation tag #66. After about 5 mins, owner showed up, discussed fact that he felt he had reserved space #17, more discussion, finally he moved his truck out of our space. We were not able to pull into space due to substantial low hanging branches (7’) of fruitless Mulberry tree so no water, sewer or cable TV connection was possible. Typically RV’s are 11-13’ tall so this would not allow any RV to pull into that space. Connected electric and awoke the next morning to no power. Reset breaker multiple times when neighbor in space #16 mentioned their power was out also. I went to office talked with Office Mgr. Andy who said they’d get maintenance up to check it out. I mentioned our blocked space by the Dodge pickup from #66, Andy said “yeah, we’ve been having trouble with that guy”.

While there, I asked for some consideration on our bill due to only have electric overnight due to low branches and was told no. I asked for owner, reply was “this campground is owned by a group of lawyers and they won’t give you a refund either”. I asked for maintenance help with the electrical and was told that the main breakers were tripping due to overuse by residents due to the heat. I was shown how to reset breakers (I informed Maint that I’d done that many times before) and was told to wait for power to be restored. Power returned, but then tripped off again after about 30 seconds so we packed up and left.

KOA Headquarters response:

Thank you for your concerns regarding Flagstaff KOA and for taking the time to share them with us.

We're sorry you were unhappy with your experience, but know, your feedback is important to us because it allows us to make improvements to ensure your camping experience is a GREAT one. The campground is unwilling to refund any money because you did stay the night. I do apologize for the lack of customer service and problems that occurred.

Please know that we at the KOA Home Office and the managers of each of our independently owned and operated campgrounds appreciate your loyalty to KOA and thank you for your feedback. We will be sure to pass along your concerns to the management at the Flagstaff KOA for their review.

Once again, thank you for contacting us.

We wish you much happy camping in the future.

  • With the mixed reviews at RvParkReviews.com we've always avoided staying there.
  • It's fun to complain when you have ALL the facts documented.. they have a very tough time arguing with that. Good job.
  • Oh forgot to mention, a guy moved in late at night behind my spot and ran a small power cord over to my power post outlet to run a small window AC unit..
  • Have to agree, we stayed there one night last summer and wont stay there again. Place was packed, tight spots, no sewer hookup. Attitude was leave if you dont like it!
  • I've always found Flagstaff an "unfriendly to visitors" sort of town. In comparison to plenty of other places we can visit.
  • You have found the worst campground I have ever used. There are lot of good KOAs, but that operation is not one of them.
  • KOA let's you post your evaluation of the campgrounds at their main website. I would do that and do it at RV Park Reviews, and Trip Advisor too.
