AZ allergies

Spent Jan and Feb in Tucson and Mesa, first time going to AZ in the winter. Late Jan or early Feb my allergies went bonkers. Stayed that way till just the last week or so after being home in MA for a month. Seems odd being so early, although things were starting to bloom while we were in the Mesa area. Does anyone else run into such?

I've got plans to go again Jan - April next winter.

I came fifty five years ago, before that they say it wasn't to bad, but everyone who came wanted a plant just like they had back home, and this is what happen, Hello
  • Yes this past winter was a bad one for allergies. We were only there a few weeks when we went out for a ride in our Tracker along dusty roads etc. The next morning my DH's hands were so swollen that we had to go to the clinic. This is the second year that we have had to seek medical attention for skin infections caused by allergies. I too was constantly taking allergy meds as well as slathering on lotions to prevent my skin from itching. For the better part of our stay he took allergy pills and put on very expensive cream and was extremely careful around dust and going out when it was windy. Has cleared up nicely once we were back home.

Someone suggested because of the wetter/windier conditions perhaps the top layer
of sand/earth has eroded and was adding more allergens to the air. Of course it didn't help that our park did nothing to treat weeds that were in other years taken care of quickly.
  • Quartzsite was brutal for me this year, what with all the rain, then all the weeds. My eyes itched incessantly, violent sneezing and my nose turned into a faucet. Weather UG shows an Allergy alert, still, for grass. I've never seen so much brush out in the desert as this year.

Got some OTC allergy meds which helped, some. I'm now in Utah and I'm still not over this. I can barely breathe through my nose at night.

Oh, and I got bronchitis in Feb. Yeah, it's been a tough year.

Soon as this Oregonian hits the Arizona desert I start taking Claritin. That helps immensely. This year I also bought a humidifier for the bedroom which helped even more.
  • oh yes, we live on the little red sinus pills from Walmart during this season. Many plants are pollinating during this time. Most weather forecasts in Phoenix include a pollen reading for various tress/plants. Bad time of year along with right after monsoon ends.
