Usually self-contained means it has a sink, toilet and holding tank (Cassette Toilet qualifies), fresh water tank and other home like convenience items.
If an RV has an Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) certification it meets the self contained standards. There's usually a silver RVIA badge or sticker somewhere near the RV manufacturer specifications and information Label.
