AZ LTVA 'self contained' rules

So I got a job working in Yuma this winter and was all excited about being able to stay in one of the LTVA while there in my truck camper, then I saw the rules about being "self contained". I have a 2011 Northtar hard sided truck camper, it has 250 solar, fridge, 25 gallon fresh water capacity, and a 6 gallon cassette toilet. I guess it's the cassette toilet that would be a problem? How strict is the BLM about this rule? I can go about 3 weeks before having to dump. Should forget trying to stay at one of the LTVA and just look for fro free boondocking spots? Are there any in the area near Yuma?

Is the Ranger going to inspect my black tank and measure out the capacity? Should I leave it mostly full of ....and hope they don't realize it's only 6 gallons?

  • I really don't think you will have a problem. There is a two week BLM area, free, behind the VFW on US 95 about five miles north of Yuma. Then you are to move, I believe, 25 miles. We have occasionaly used that spot.
  • I have yet to see any "inspection" of an RV.
Now if you are a problem or slob and cause problems you may be inspected trying to find a reason to get rid of you.
So blend in cause no problems and you will be fine but you are self contained
  • I have never stayed in ltva. I understood that you had to park closer to the out houses if not self contained? If there are out houses at that particular ltva. Isn't that the requirement for not being self contained?
  • Usually self-contained means it has a sink, toilet and holding tank (Cassette Toilet qualifies), fresh water tank and other home like convenience items.

If an RV has an Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) certification it meets the self contained standards. There's usually a silver RVIA badge or sticker somewhere near the RV manufacturer specifications and information Label.
