About half of the Old Bahia Honda bridge has been closed. None of the section over water is open.I go up there about every day for a brisk walk and to see sharks and rays. Just won't be the same.

The official explanation from the web site: "The section of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge that extends out over the water has been closed due to possible unsafe conditions. The trail leading to the bridge and the section of the bridge that was not part of the original Oversea Railway is still open to visitors and offers a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."Too bad is was always a nice feature, and I predict it will never be able to reopen as the funds are just not there to reopen it. I agree with Luke, it will not be the same.

Not quite the same, but; On a sunny day when the wind is calm walk under the Rt 1 bridge and over to where the cabins are. Then walk a another fifty or sixty feet to the broken concrete wall and look over right in close to the wall. You'll see lots of small tropical fish including several species of Parrot fish, Sargent majors and lots of Mangroves Snappers. They are there every day We saw an Angel fish there too.Jack L

I wonder if this will have an effect on the reservations for Bahia Honda. I don't think they will go empty, but I wonder how much easier it may be able to get reservations.....never been there before. Was able to score a couple nights in July.

My guess would be the cumulative effect of Tropical Storms, Hurricanes, and salt water.

If you were to go under it in a boat last may and took a look at all the rusted pieces that are hanging off it and falling into the water almost on a daily basis, you would realize that it was just as dangerous.
There have been signs for a long time warning the boaters how dangerous it is.

Next time you go over the seven mile bridge take a look over at the old RR bridge, and you'll see the same thing.

We also was there last May. It did not appear to be unsafe to me. What happened to it?

We were there last May watching a shark swimming back and forth along the sea wall, there were people snorkeling at each end.

I'm not sure if you're aware or not, but the bridge has nothing to do with access to the park. It was just a section of the old railroad turned highway bridge, that was closed many years ago. They cut out a section of the bridge and you could walk out to where they blocked it off, at the cut section. I'd imagine many people who have gone to the park, never bothered to go out to the bridge, which sits fairly high over the channel

A kid jumped off one day I was there---for the heck of it. He was OK, but he didn't look at the current before hand.

And I've seen many folks stand on the top rail--scaring the hell out me.

Somewhere I have a picture from about 1972 showing a guy that was next to us , diving off the bridge. I'll have to dig it out
