Best campgrounds in Glacier Nat. Park that allow gennys

We are planning on visiting Glacier National Park in July and would like to hear from those that have stayed in the park campgrounds.

Based on what I've seen, the park has 13 campgrounds, with some allowing limited genny hours. We are OK with the limited hours since we have solar but still like to use the genny preparing meals and boosting the batteries a bit late afternoons. We also have satellite so we'll be looking for satellite-friendly sites.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

  • We loved Many Glacier campground on the east side of the park. They don’t take reservations so we camped at St. Mary’s for one night and took our truck to Many Glacier the next morning by nine to grab a site as people left. We have a thirty one foot trailer and there were several sites open where we could fit. The campground allowed generators at morning and early evenings.

It is a great, scenic location and has some of the best hiking in the park. Bring everything you need since it is a remote location.
  • GordonThree,

    Well said.

I have a Magnum. It was in my price range. I think if money were no object, I would replace it with a Victron (should it fail).

The remote on the Magnum allows one to "bump up" the float voltage to get amps into the battery bank quickly. Just don't forget to set it back afterwards.
  • I stayed in St Mary's on the east end of the park. No issues with the rather short generator hours.

Make your system optimized to make best use of the generator time, that's the key to handling short hours.

None of this having the generator puttering along in ECO mode. My Yamaha hardly ever runs in ECO mode. If I don't have a need for it to run full-tilt, it's better shut off.

Many regulars seem to dislike the Magnum as a "smart charger" but I've not had issue with it. On a single Yamaha, the Magnum pushes 85 amps at around 14.1-14.4 volts into my AGM battery bank. Only the last few percent does it slow down, this is where I could use ECO mode.

I also normally switch the fridge to AC while the gen is running... Gasoline is a lot easier to refuel than propane in my humblest opinion.

As far as preparing meals, I guess I use a toaster briefly for breakfast, the inverter handles that just fine. The range is gas, the grill is charcoal, neither require electricity.

I believe Two Medicine allows them, although we rarely used ours in 4 days, we weren't in it much from dusk till dawn, if we had solar we wouldn't have used it at all.
As far as satellite , Two Medicine has some wide open sites, along with some gorgeous scenery.

I'm trying to find out if those that have visited the park prefer particular campgrounds over others. The genny hours are posted on the park website so that's not an issue.
  • C loop in St. Mary’s campground on the east side allows limited generator use. Good luck on getting an open site this late in the season.
