http://www.totalescape.com/active/campstuff/NF/NFS.html#.WHhLW1JHbv4 Here you can find the National Forests in Northern California. https://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/map/state_list.shtml#C Each National Forest website has information about dispersed camping. Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) can be downloaded from each National Forest website. MVUMs show areas available for dispersed camping along Forest Service roads. Google Maps satellite layer referenced to MVUMs can reveal likely campsites. Scouting likely spots can help finalize site decisions. Talking to the staff at associated Ranger Stations can yield insight.
https://www.fs.usda.gov/htnf/ National Forests located in Nevada include the Humboldt-Toiyabe and parts of the Inyo National Forest.
The BLM has maps which shows their land holdings. Again, comparing BLM maps to Google Maps satellite layer can reveal possible sites. A visit or call to District BLM offices can get you dispersed camping info for BLM lands. Scouting is invaluable as well.
